Ronald Koeman Marks Wijnaldum As the pillar of the Reconstruction:
According to the Dutch newspaper ‘AD’, Ronald Koeman sees his compatriot and Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum as one of the fundamental pieces of the new Barcelona squad. The player’s contract with the Reds ends in June 2021 and he still hasn’t reached an agreement for his renewal.
After a blank season, with no titles, and with an embarrassing Champions League exit against Bayern Munich, Barcelona placed Ronaldo Koeman in charge of the squad with the aim of reverting the image of the team.
The ex-Netherlands national team manager will have to make a transition after an unsweetened end of cycle. As president Josep María Bartomeu confirmed after the defeat against the Bavarians, some heavyweights of the Barcelona squad will have to wave goodbye to the side.
In the last few days, a large number of players have been linked with Barca, and in the Netherlands, they have placed Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum on Barcelona’s agenda.
According to ‘AD’, Koeman sees in his 29-year-old compatriot the pillar of the side’s reconstruction, one of the fundamental pieces of the new squad and who would play CM alongside his national side teammate Frenkie de Jong.
Liverpool could ask for a sum close to 40 million euros for his Anfield exit, but Wijnaldum’s contract runs out in June 2021, which would cheapen the deal if an agreement isn’t reached for his renewal.
Barca could also include some players such as Sergio Busquets or Ivan Rakitic with the aim of securing one of the executioners of Barcelona’s 2018-19 Champions League campaign.
