Manchester United Spots £109m Replacement for error-prone David De Gea:

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick at the 2018 World Cup against Spain, the Manchester United ‘keeper has looked a pale shadow of his former self.

Errors have become a regular occurrence and a player who was once the Red Devils’ undisputed star man is now on the cusp of being banished to the bench.

The prospect of demoting De Gea is a daunting one for United, mainly due to the fact that the Spaniard is the highest-paid ‘keeper in the world on £375,000-per-week.

So if they wish to move on from the former Atletico Madrid man, the best way around the issue would be to offload him and sign a high-profile replacement.

That’s clearly something in the minds of the United hierarchy, because they have now started laying the groundwork to begin negotiations for the world’s best ‘keeper, Jan Oblak.

As reported by The Sun, the Red Devils have made it known that they want to be kept in the loop with regards to the Slovenian’s future.

Oblak reportedly is keen to pursue a fresh challenge, with Chelsea also keen on signing the Atletico superstar.

The only downside for United is that Oblak will not come cheap. His current release clause stands at €120m – around £109m.

But the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic could mean Atletico would be willing to let him go for a cheaper price.

Am I the only one thinking ‘player-plus-cash deal’ here?

Surely a package of De Gea and a decent sum of money – possibly £30-40m – would be more than enough to convince Atletico to part ways with their Slovenian star, right?

Maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my behalf, but swap deals are going to be just what the doctor ordered this summer and I think United could use it to their advantage here.
